1.  A 65 year old woman presents to A&E with fever, shortness of breath and chest pain on coughing. Her Chest X-ray reveals left lower lobe consolidation and pleural effusion.

 

2. A 30 year old intravenous drug user presents to casualty with a two day history of shortness of breath. He is HIV positive. Chest X-ray reveals bilateral lower lobe consolidation.

 

3. A 40 year old man of Indian origin presents to his GP with a one week history of weight loss, night sweats and haemoptysis. Chest X-ray reveals a cavitating lesion in the right upper lobe.

 

4. A 30 year old hotel maintenance worker presents to his GP with fever, dry cough, nausea and diarrhoea. Chest X-ray reveals patchy consolidation on both lung fields. Plasma sodium is low.  The patient responds well to erythromycin and rifampicin.  

 

5. A 25 year old woman with a love for birds, presented to her GP with a 1 week history of fever, malaise and shortness of breath. Chest x-ray revealed left lower lobe consolidation.  The patient was treated with tetracycline and improved.
